History of El Paso, TX

Before El Paso, Texas was actually known as the city of El Paso, it was home to many different settlers. The area was first used for farming Maize. Many immigrants from Mexico also inhabited the area and started making use of the land. These immigrants were not the only ones. You will also find in the history of El Paso that several tribes took a part in inhabiting the city as well. Some of these tribes were known as the Manso, Jumano, and Suma. This was well before the mid 1500's when the first European explorers entered the area and actually founded it.

El Paso did not actually start out as part of Texas. In fact, at first it was part of New Mexico. It was not until the mid 1800's that Texas took over the area and made it a part of their state. It was actually the base for the Spanish government up until this time. Since, it has remained a part of Texas and is actually one of the largest areas in Texas, and Texas is the largest and most populated state in the entire United States.

Crime in the Streets

El Paso was also a big part of the Civil War. They did not have a lot of support during this time, but afterwards they did start to grow a lot in number. One thing that they are known for is being a large "boomtown". This means that they had a lot of violence and crime. They were widely known for their gunmen and their prostitutes. For a while, they did not have any sort of law or justice, and it was not until later after the first World War that they started cracking down on a lot of the violence, gambling, and prostitution that took place for many years.

After the Mexican Revolution

Once the Mexican Revolution took place, a lot of changes started to take place in El Paso, TX. First of all, it started to become a civilized area. There were many different businesses that started to open. They were mostly all Spanish speaking at first. There were newspapers that started to be printed. There were also some theaters and schools formed. This made it an ideal place for families once the crime and the craziness subsided in the area.

Commercial Growth in El Paso

These days, El Paso has grown even more. The population continues to grow by leaps and bounds, and many companies such as Helen of Troy Limited call El Paso home to their headquarters. Western Refining, Spira Footwear and Fred Loya Insurance are also common name companies that have their roots located in this city. El Paso Natural Gas Company was started in the city, but has since moved to relocate in Houston. There are also some great clothing manufacturers that are found in the El Paso area.

Educational Institutions

More and more people are choosing El Paso for their continued education. There are a variety of two year and four year colleges to choose from in the area. You can get an education at schools such as El Paso Community College, International Business College, and Western Technical College. If a four year college is your choice, then visit schools such as Texas Tech College of Architecture, University of Texas at El Paso, or Webster University. There is even a world renowned medical school known as the Paul L Foster School of Medicine. These are all great colleges and schools for those that want to continue their education in a city that is rich in history and culture.
